Rio Hondo Prep has been waiting two weeks to get that sour taste out of their collective mouth.

The Kares surrendered a 60-yard TD pass on the final play of King’s Academy’s 52-46 victory back on October 2nd.

After taking last week off, RHP opened Gold Coast League play with undefeated and visiting Viewpoint.

The Patriots took the opening drive of the game 82 yards on 12 plays while eating up more than half of the first quarter.

The drive was capped by an 11-yard TD pass from Xavier Gobeck to Estaban Montelagre.

It was Viewpoint’s only lead of the game.

Christian Lee got the Kares even with his 10-yard TD run on the final play of the first quarter.

With the game tied at 7-7, the Patriots drove all the way to the Kares 1-yard line, but they actually lost yards and turned the ball over on downs.

Pumped up by their defensive stand, RHP put together a nine-play 96-yard drive to claim a 14-7 lead on Matt Montez’s 8-yard TD run.

Rio Hondo Prep would get one more chance to score before the break.

Montez literally ran over a Viewpoint defender and planted his butt in the grass while entering the south end zone with three seconds to play in the second quarter.

On that drive, the Kares were without a timeout and just seconds remaining on the clock.

But they got a break when a VHS defender got called for a penalty for trying to disrupt RHP’s chances of getting a snap off as the refs were trying to place the ball from the previous play.

Rio Hondo Prep got the ball first in the third quarter, and Viewpoint picked up a Christian Lee fumble and returned it 35 yards for a TD and the Patriots pulled to with 21-14.

But the Kares responded immediately and Lee sprinted into the north end zone from 28 yards out to regain a two-score advantage.

Lee also scored on a 7-yard run.

Kevin Lara capped the Kares scoring with a 31-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

RHP had advantages in first downs (26-12), rushing (431-97) and total offense (459-221).

Lee carried the ball 20 times for 205 yards and the three TDs.

Montez gained 130 yards on 17 carries.

And Elias Har returned from injury and carried the ball three times for 37 yards.

He caught a 22-yard pass from Donald Scheffler.

Har also had three tackles and picked a pass on defense.

Gobeck completed 7-of-9 for 91 yards, including one TD and the interception.

Ben Burkin led the Viewpoint ground game with 72 yards on 13 carries.

Shane Anderson had game highs in receptions (5) and receiving yards (75), while Montelegre finished with a pair of catches for 44 yards and the opening drive TD reception.

Carlo Castaneda and Lee led the RHP defense with six tackles apiece.

Nicolas Harrington and Aiden Delgadillo finished with five tackles.

Isaac Guzman tallied four tackles, including one sack.

And Troy Seto finished with four tackles.

Up next: The Kares will host Brentwood (6-2) next Friday at 7 in the second and final Gold Coast League contest for RHP.
