Tennis:
It was a tight and exciting match between the Maranatha Lady Minutemen and the Santa Fe Sentinels, until it wasn’t.
For the second consecutive year, Maranatha and Santa Fe were tied 6-6 after two rounds, and for the second consecutive year, Santa Fe subbed in their alternates for the final round, ensuring an 11-7 victory for the Lady Minutemen.
In the first round, Sarah Fong and Grace Yang won their singles sets, 6-3 and 6-0 respectively, while all three doubles teams lost their sets, 3-6, with one contest still undecided, at No. 1 singles.
Hannah Su and her counterpart each held serve throughout the set, until Su was finally broken at the end for a 5-7 loss.
That gave the Sentinels a 4-2 advantage after the first round.
In the second round, the Lady Minutemen responded strongly, as Su, Fong, and Yang swept, 6-2, 6-0, 6-4, and Jennifer Chu/Peony Liu notched MHS’s first doubles win, 6-4, giving Maranatha their own 4-2 round advantage, and evening the overall score at 6-6.
It is at this point that the potential for a nail-biting finish was clipped, as the Sentinels emptied their bench and brought in their alternates.
Had they kept their team intact, the final outcome would have likely gone to the Lady Minutemen, either 10-8 or 9-9, with MHS likely winning on games.
But, of course, that’s not a certainty.
Though highly competitive tennis was played, what stood out the most from today’s match was the sportsmanship, fair play, and respect each squad showed one another.
It was a display of the way high school sports should be played.
The win brings Maranatha’s overall record to 4-2, while Santa Fe drops to 6-2.
Up next: The Lady Minutemen turn right back around and host Providence/Burbank on Tuesday at Pasadena High School, in another non-league match.
