Baseball:
Don’t look now, but Covina finds itself just one-game back of first-place Charter Oak in the Valle Vista League standings.
The Colts opened the season 4-10-1, but Coach Tim O’Leary’s boys have begun VVL play 3-1 after this week’s sweep of West Covina.
CHS secured an 11-4 victory at WCHS on Wednesday, and they capped the sweep, 8-4, on Friday.
Covina took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning and they never trailed.
Rieleigh Rangel was saddled with the loss after surrendering eight runs (four earned) on 11 hits and one hit batter over 4 2/3 innings.
Rangel walked one and struck out one CHS batter.
Evan Chavez had a pair of doubles and scored two runs.
Donovan Johnson went 2-for-3 with a walk, triple, run and two RBIs, including one on a sac fly.
Lucas Thorpe had a pair of RBI singles.
Ethan Echeverria went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Isaac Flores walked, singled and scored.
Aaron Magdaleno went 2-for-3 with a run and one RBI.
Kevin Mitchell was hit by pitch and scored.
Alex Galaviz singled, scored and had an RBI ground out.
Angel Solis scored one run.
Isaac Flores got the win after going 5 2/3 innings and allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits.
Flores issued one walk and registered four strikeouts.
Kevin Mitchell (1/3 IP) and Izziah Seieroe (1) combined for 1 1/3 scoreless and hitless innings in relief.
Ethan Okazaki had a pair of RBI singles.
DiMaggio Beas doubled and scored.
Joaquin Diaz singled twice and scored a pair of runs.
Andrew Maldonado singled and scored.
Levi Ruiz drove in a run on a sac fly.
Up next: The Bulldogs and Colts have three two-game VVL series remaining in the 2026 regular season.
On Wednesday, Covina hosts Rowland, and West Covina travels to Northview.
