Baseball:
South Hills, the 12th ranked program in the state by MaxPreps, defeated their hosts from San Dimas, 4-1, in game one of a three-game Hacienda League series.
The Saints out-hit the Huskies, 9-4, but two SDHS errors turned into a pair of SHHS runs.
Gabe Guerrero earned the win after going four innings and allowing one run on seven hits.
Guerrero issued one walk and fanned a pair of San Dimas batters.
Marc Morales, who appears to be the SGV’s most effective closer, got the last nine outs and surrendered a pair of hits.
Morales walked one and struck out four batters.
Aaden Escarcega went 3-for-4, including an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning.
Josh Calcanas singled three times and scored the Saints lone run on Monday.
Eleazar Santillan doubled for SDHS.
Dean Brosterhous walked and singled and Kelson Curtis singled to account for the rest of the Saints offense.
James Rocha was saddled with the loss after surrendering four runs (two earned) on three hits over five innings.
Rocha walked two and fanned five SHHS batters.
Manuel Tinajero provided two scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit and striking out two.
The Huskies scored three runs in the top of the first and got one more in the second inning.
Carson Baker and Richie Soto both had RBI singles to help South Hills improve to 11-1 overall.
Guerrero was hit by pitch, reached base on an error, and he scored both times.
Diego Villarreal walked and scored.
Victor Merlos doubled and Hudson Hempel singled in the win.
Paxton Czubek reached base on a dropped third strike and scored.
Middle-infielders Diego Villarreal and Carson Baker made a number of solid plays in defense of Guerrero and Morales.
Up next: The Huskies host the Saints on Tuesday at 3:30.
