Baseball:

If there’s one thing you can take away from Evan Bustamante’s first two starts, it’s that he’s going to go deep into the game and Northview’s going to have a real shot to win.

Last week, he went 5 2/3 innings and lost to undefeated South Hills in spite of allowing just two runs, surrendering no walks and striking out 10.

On Tuesday, Bustamante earned the win in the Vikings’ 4-1 victory at Bonita.

It was the second meeting between NHS and BHS in five days.

Bustamante went six innings, and he allowed one run on four hits.

He walked one and fanned six Bonita batters.

Fifty-two of his 81 pitches were strikes.

Levi Rosales struck out the side in the seventh to earn the save.

The Bearcats kryptonite thus far is leaving runners on base, and Tuesday was no different.

BHS had the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the sixth, and the boys in green were only able to get one run to cross the plate.

Esteban Parra singled twice and scored on a sac fly by Sean Compton.

Drew Apodaca and Parker Alexander had one hit apiece in the loss.

“Bus is a competitor, and he wants the ball in our biggest games,” Northview coach Tosh Clark said.

Adam Raab went 4 1/3 innings for BHS, and he was charged with four unearned runs on six hits.

Raab walked one and fanned one NHS batter.

Evan Nguyen (1 2/3 IP) and Daniel Nageer (1) combined to go 2 2/3 scoreless and hitless innings, and they combined to strike out four.

Jaime Gallardo, Bobby Granados and Isaiah Benavidez singled and scored one run apiece for the Vikings.

Noah Martinez drove in a run on a sac fly.

Ezekiel Martinez went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Michael Mendoza doubled.

Fernie Casas reached on an error, and he came around to score.

Up next: The Bearcats host San Dimas on Wednesday at 4.

The Vikings host welcome Rancho Cucamonga to their campus on Friday at 3.

Quotable:

Northview pitcher, Evan Bustamante: “I had an off year in 2025, so I’m really happy to get off to this start to my senior season. I’m learning how to hit my spots and when to use my offspeed pitches. I’ve also been throwing a lot of strikes. I just want to go out there and do as well as I can for as long as I can to help this team win games. I’ve been happy to see how hard my teammates are working at practice, and I’ve got a lot of confidence in all of them. I think Jayden Chagollan is going to have a huge year at the plate for us, and I think we’ll battle for a league title.”
