Flag Football:
Bonita pulled off a twofer on Wednesday evening.
BHS defeated their visitors from Claremont, 27-13.
In the process, the Bearcats handed Claremont its first loss, and they created a three-way logjam atop the Palomares League standings with Ayala and the Wolfpack.
Bonita closed out the win with a 14-0 advantage in the second half.
Tressa Beatty has stepped up her play big time.
Beatty, the only quarterback in school history, threw an unusually high number of interceptions earlier in the season as rule changes have hampered higher scoring around the SGV.
However, of late, Beatty has been money.
She completed 18-of-30 for 233 yards.
And that included three TDs and zero picks.
Beatty hit seven different receivers on Wednesday.
Kody McKinney had a monster game with nine catches for 133 yards.
McKinney reeled in a pair of TD passes from Beatty.
Peyton Mann had three receptions for 30 yards.
Laney Sweeney (2-for-14 yards), Jenna Campbell (1-for-20), Haley Kurey (1-for-13), and Kendra Anderson (1-for-16) combined for five catches for 63 yards.
Peyton Lak caught a 7-yard TD pass.
Hayden Andrew led the BHS defense with six tackles, while Julia Bowman had three tackles and two sacks.
Leah Reynolds picked a Claremont pass on defense.
Up next: The Bearcats will host Ayala next Tuesday evening at 7:45.
Quotable:
Bonita coach, Mike Mann: “This was a big team win. Claremont has amazing athletes, and we respect them tremendously. It really came down to us making a few more plays in the second half. Kody McKinney took her game to the next level and as one of our captains, refused to let her team lose. Tressa Beatty was also phenomenal tonight and controlled the game like we all know she can. Sophomore Julia Bowman made some big-time plays on defense. She truly changed the flow of the game in our favor and played the best game of her young career. After we lost our starting corner Madi Arzate to injury, Riley Lehigh stepped up and played lights out. She had her moment to shine and made every play count.”
