Football:
St. Francis’ quest for a CIF-SS Division 6 championship was thwarted by their visitors from Murrieta Mesa.
The Rams found themselves in an 11-point hole in the first quarter at Jim Bonds Stadium.
However, MMHS was able to edge SFHS, 31-28, after outscoring the Golden Knights, 28-14, in the second and third quarters.
John Sanders hit Deveon Blaylock on a 40-yard TD pass, and Mason Maddox on a 21-yard score to give St. Francis that 14-3 lead in the first quarter.
Murrieta Mesa answered with TD runs on 2 and 19 yards respectively, by Collin Vitte and Trey Gamble, and they took their first lead of the game at 17-14.
Sanders responded with a 12-yard TD pass to JT Martin with 44 seconds remaining in the first half.
Unfortunately, the Rams would outscore the Golden Knights 14-7 in the third quarter, and neither program had any fourth-quarter points.
St. Francis’ final scoring play was a 2-yard TD pass from Sanders to Julian Navarro with 2:20 to play in the third quarter.
SFHS attempted a 38-yard field goal with 28 seconds to play in the hopes of forcing overtime, but the kick was no good.
Brady Cofre and Shawn Sanders picked off passes for the St. Francis defense.
John Sanders had a great final outing in a Golden Knights uniform.
The senior quarterback completed 24-of-36 for 373 yards and four TDs.
Maddox (6-for-115 & one TD), Martin (5-for-92 & one TD) and Blaylock (4-for-62 & one TD) combined for 15 receptions for 269 yards and three scores.
Looking back, St. Francis has much to be proud of.
The Golden Knights began the 2024 season at 0-6, and yet they won five of their final seven games and they earned an appearance in a D-6 semifinal.
