Don’t let the score fool you.
It wasn’t nearly as close as the final score might indicate.
Bonita took a 34-0 lead into the fourth quarter.
And after taking their starters out on Senior Night, the Grizzlies scored three times in the final 11 minutes of Thursday’s Sierra League showdown at BHS.
Bonita’s (8-0, 3-0) win sets up next week’s massive showdown at Charter Oak (7-1, 3-0) among the only two Sierra League teams without a loss.
Midway through the first quarter, Joseph Lara got the Bearcats on the board with a 2-yard TD run.
Just over four minutes later, Jacob Maddox would intercept a LOHS pass and bring it back 80 yards for a pick-six and a 13-0 lead.
Travis Lippert sent the Bearcats into the break with a 20-point advantage.
With 1:33 remaining in the first half, Lippert hit Isaiah Lazarus on a 10-yard scoring strike.
And for all intents and purposes, Lippert put the game on ice with 21-and-70-yard TD passes to Dylan Robinson.
The Grizzlies got TD runs of 4 and 15 yards from Nicholas Martinez, and they’d recover a fumble with 56 seconds left to pull to within 34-20.
Up next: Both programs will be in action next Friday.
BHS travels to Charter Oak, and LOHS will host Glendora.
