Flag Football:
When you hear “Beatty” and “football,” the first thought that comes to mind for area fans is obviously that of former APU and current Bonita football coach, Bo Beatty.
In just four games in the inaugural flag football season, however, it’s his 16-year-old daughter that is earning headlines.
Tressa Beatty has led Bonita to a 4-0 record, and none of the four wins has been more dramatic than Wednesday night.
The Bearcats trailed Yorba Linda throughout, including a 13-7 deficit well into the second half.
But late in the game, Beatty picked off her YLHS counterpart to give BHS one last shot at making a last-minute drive.
Beatty would finish the opportunity with a 12-yard TD run with 18 seconds to play, and the Bearcats secured a 19-13 victory.
The BHS junior tossed one TD pass and ran for two scores.
Beatty completed 16-of-26 for 139 yards.
Haley Kurrey led the BHS ground game with 61 yards on four carries.
Beatty rushed for 25 yards on five carries.
Kody McKinney carried the ball three times for 22 yards.
Brianna Sandmark led the Bearcats receiving corps with six catches for 52 yards.
Freshman Laney Sweeney had 33 receiving yards on three catches, including one for a TD.
McKinney caught three passes for 24 yards.
Laila Washington had a pair of receptions for 12 yards.
Kayla Heinlein led the BHS defense with seven tackles.
Up next: The Bearcats travel to La Serna next Wednesday at 3:30.
The Lancers have only played one game thus far, a 14-12 setback at Villa Park.
