Tennis:
On a day where many matches in Southern California were canceled due to the heatwave, the Burbank Tennis Center did not reach the Wet Bulb Global Temperature reading (WGBT) that would require play to be canceled or halted.
But it got close. Both teams from Maranatha and Village Christian agreed to play with altered rules that allowed for extra hydration breaks and extra rest, which helped get both teams to the finish line.
Maranatha was not able to field a full squad today, due to illness, forcing new doubles pairings.
They began the match with an automatic 0-3 deficit.
Nonetheless, the team fought hard and gave their all, while beginning to learn the art of adapting to changing circumstances and environments, while still producing high quality tennis.
When one of the Crusaders’ singles players had to retire after the first round of play, it forced them to forfeit her two remaining singles sets.
All in all, it was a solid day for the Lady Minutemen, as they improved their play from their last encounter with the CIF-SS champion Crusaders two weeks ago, a 15-3 loss.
Scoreline:
Singles:
Grace Yang – 0-6, 6-1, 6-0 (forfeit)
Hannah Su – 0-6, 6-3, 6-0 (forfeit)
Sarah Fong – 0-6, 4-6, 6-3
Doubles:
Jennifer Chu/Natalia Kalajian – 2-6, 2-6, 6-3
Chloe Soh/Hannalee Trout – 1-6, 2-6
Catherine Hayes/Hannalee Trout – 2-6
Up next: The Lady Minutemen drop to 6-3 overall, 0-2 in league. On Thursday, they hope to get their first league win, as they host the Whittier Christian Heralds.
