College Baseball:
Pasadena City College was nine outs away from evening their three-game SCC series with Long Beach on Thursday afternoon at Brookside Park.
The Lancers held an 11-4 advantage as their visitors grabbed their bats in the top of the seventh inning.
However, LBCC had other plans.
The Vikings scored eight runs in the seventh, and they got two more in the eighth and ninth innings to secure a 16-11 victory.
Fast forward to Saturday afternoon, and Long Beach needed three outs to secure a three-game conference sweep.
But, if you’ve paid any attention to the PCC baseball program over the last decade, just when it looks like they’re down for the count, the Lancers say ‘not so fast,’ with their actions.
And that was the case on Saturday afternoon in Long Beach.
PCC rallied for a 7-6 victory by scoring a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning.
Max Ghiglieri went four innings, and he was charged with four runs on four hits.
Ghiglieri walked three and fanned three Lancers.
Niko Riera was saddled with the loss after surrendering a pair of runs on two walks.
Benjamin Dorantes replaced Riera with one out, two on and that a 6-5 lead.
Isaac Ton doubled in a run to tie the game at 6-6.
And Devin Munoz’s two-out singled plated what turned out to be the game-winning run.
Munoz went 2-for-5 with one run and two RBIs.
Ton had two hits in four at-bats, scored and had that ninth-inning RBI double.
Devon Eskridge walked, singled, doubled, scored and his sac fly in the top of the first gave PCC a 1-0 lead.
Bryan Richman singled, scored and had an RBI on a fielder’s choice.
Evan Nahra drew a pair of walks and drove in a run on a fourth-inning sac fly.
Omar Cisneros walked twice and singled.
Tyler Garcia walked and scored.
LBCC got to Joe Bacon for six runs on 11 hits over 6 2/3 innings.
Bacon issued three walks and registered four strikeouts.
Aiden Nunez (4-2) was credited with the win after 2 1/3 scoreless innings.
Nunez allowed two hits, didn’t walk a batter and struck out one.
Eshua Desai went 3-for-4 with a walk, two-run triple and an RBI single.
Danny Rodriguez singled, scored and had an RBI triple.
Max Ghiglieri singled, doubled and scored.
Aaron Mingo went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs and one RBI.
Jackson Pohl singled twice and scored.
Ryan Lopetegui went 1-for-5 with a run and one RBI
Caleb Brandon singled once in the loss.
