College Baseball:
After 21 consecutive wins and a perfect 12-0 mark in South Coast Conference games, the No. 2 program in the state (Mt. SAC) dropped the first two of their three-game series with No. 3 Cerritos.
The Mounties three-game conference lead had been whittled to one by the Falcons as they met up Saturday afternoon in Walnut.
Mt. SAC scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning and never trailed in a 6-2 victory.
They out-hit Cerritos, 10-5.
Derek Valdez was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits over six innings.
Valdez (8-2) walked two and fanned a pair of Mounties.
MSAC got two more off Nicholas Moreno.
Moreno was charged with two runs on two hits and a pair of walks over the seventh inning.
One game after going 0-for-4 and leaving five runners on base, the state’s top hitter, Landon White looked a lot like Landon White.
White went 3-for-4 with a run, an RBI single in the fifth and a two-run double in the seventh.
He went 7-for-13 in the series with three doubles, two runs, four RBIs, and his batting average improved to three points north of the .500 mark.
Bryan Bradshaw, the Mounties leadoff batter and their second leading hitter in average (.411) went 1-for-9 in the first two losses.
On Saturday, Bradshaw drew a walk, singled twice and scored a pair of runs.
Ty Thomas got MSAC on the board in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single.
Tyler Stull, who also drew a walk, followed Thomas with an RBI single of his own, and the Mounties led 2-0.
After Cerritos had pulled to within 3-2 in the top of the sixth inning, Jackson Giacone’s RBI double gave Mt. SAC an insurance run.
Miguel Perez walked, singled and scored.
Terrell Jackson drew a walk and scored a pair of runs.
Cole Nachreiner singled in the win.
Brenden Menchaca went 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits.
Menchaca (5-1) issued a pair of walks and registered six strikeouts.
Sam Silversmith earned the save with 3 1/3 scoreless and hitless innings in relief.
Silversmith walked two and struck out five Falcons.
Mateo Heredia walked, tripled and scored.
Evan Saito singled and scored.
Nate Gardenswartz drove in Heredia on a sac fly to pull Cerritos to within 2-1 of the Mounties in the top of the fifth inning.
And the next inning, Isaiah Rios drove in a run on a fielder’s choice.
Dylan Immel walked and singled.
Brody Cuellar and Lucas Scott had one hit apiece to account for the rest of the Falcons offense.
