College Baseball:
Chaffey College became the 13th JC program (out of 80-plus) to reach the 20-win plateau.
And they did so in dramatic fashion.
The Panthers trailed throughout Thursday’s IEAC showdown with their visitors from Cerro Coso, including a 4-1 deficit as they picked up their bats in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Chaffey, though, rallied for two runs in the seventh and they got two more in the ninth to edge the Coyotes, 5-4.
The win also allowed the Panthers to take a one-game lead atop the IEAC standings.
Jackson Price went six innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on eight hits.
Price walked two and struck out nine, but he was not in on the decision.
Ian Hoffstetter got the win after going three scoreless innings and scattering three hits.
Hoffstetter didn’t issue a walk and registered a pair of strikeouts.
Kyle Phin walked, doubled twice and scored.
Cayden Johnson had a pair of doubles of his own and scored one run.
Jordan Boman went 2-for-5 with one run.
Deri Steiert-Couture walked, singled and scored.
Daniel Rios had an RBI single.
Carson Lee went four scoreless innings for the Coyotes, allowing three hits, walking four and striking out a pair of Chaffey batters.
Kanon Welbourne was charged with the loss after allowing two runs on two hits and a pair of walks over 2/3 of an inning.
Ryder Young drew a pair of walks, scored, hit a solo HR and an RBI double.
Dominick Torrez singled, doubled and scored.
Eric Valdivia went 2-for-5 with an RBI single in the ninth to tie the game at 4-4.
Jordan Daniels walked, singled and his sac fly drove in Ryan Melton with the game-winning run.
Melton walked twice, singled, drove in one and scored two runs.
Jaden St. Cyr walked and scored.
Derek Almeda and Kaden Durazo had one single apiece for the Panthers.
Up next: The Panthers travel to Cerro Coso on Saturday at 2:30 to settle their three-game series.
