Boys Basketball:

When tonight’s CIF-SS Division 3A semifinal tips off at SDHS, the Saints accept, acknowledge and embrace their role as the game’s underdog.

It’s nothing new to them.

San Dimas has gotten used to being overlooked all season, and yet, among the 40 schools this site covers, only Maranatha and SDHS remain standing.

The Saints welcome Norte Vista to their gym at 7.

The SDHS-NVHS winner will face the Keppel-Aquinas victor next week in the D-3A final.

Why would Norte Vista be considered the favorite?

The Braves (25-6) have won six more games than the Saints (19-11) in 2024-25.

Norte Vista (139) is 125 spots higher in the current MaxPreps state rankings than San Dimas (264).

And they have an 84-63 average margin of victory, as compared to a 60-56 edge for SDHS through their first 30 games.

Norte Vista has won 14 consecutive games, and they haven’t fallen since a 79-66 setback to Bishop’s back on December 30th.

NVHS is 10-3 in road games, and SDHS is 7-2 in their own gym.

The Braves are coming off a 94-90 quarterfinal round victory at Quartz Hill.

Carter Fulton has scored 84 points in the playoffs, including 43 in Tuesday’s quarterfinal thriller.

Hugo Morales has been a key contributor as well, scoring 86 points in three postseason games.

Marinio Elissaint is their third leading scorer in the playoffs with 34 total points.

Why does San Dimas have a legitimate shot of winning tonight’s game?

First of all, they are very well coached.

Jeremy Ketterling and his staff put together a comprehensive game plan that gives the Saints a chance to win every night.

They’re also outstanding at making in-game adjustments.

Perhaps the most prudent reason to believe in San Dimas is their versatility and balance offensively.

On any given night, Nathan Yearout, Luke Chavez and Jeremiah Garzon can lead SDHS in scoring.

In fact, in postseason wins over Calvary Chapel Santa Ana, Esperanza and Providence, Garzon (CCSA), Chavez (Esp) and Yearout (PHS) have led the Saints in scoring one time each.

Yearout has 44 points in the playoffs, including 28 in Tuesday’s 65-64 victory at Providence in overtime.

And that included six 3-pointers.

Garzon has scored 44 points, and Chavez has chipped in with 37.

San Dimas also features a point guard named Andrew Diep, whose basketball IQ is off the charts.

Diep’s ability to find his teammates for easy buckets has been key to this playoff run.

And when need be, Diep can score as well.

On Tuesday, he scored 10 points and dished out nine assists at Providence.

If SDHS can minimize its turnovers, and establish their 3-point productivity early, there is no reason to believe they can’t earn a spot in the D-3A title game.

When their gym is packed and boisterous, San Dimas can be a very difficult place for an opposing program to notch a road win.

Good luck to Coach Ketterling, his staff and their players tonight.
