Baseball:

Ayala opened its 2025 season with an impressive 3-0 victory over a very good Los Osos program in Rancho Cucamonga.

The Bulldogs (2) and Grizzlies (1) pitching staffs combined to allow just three total hits on Thursday.

Caleb Trugman began his junior campaign with six scoreless innings, and he allowed just one hit.

Trugman didn’t issue a walk, and he registered three strikeouts.

Easton Sarmiento got the final three outs.

Sarmiento allowed a one-out double to Wyatt Mohler.

But he closed out the game with a ground ball and a strikeout.

Hunter Meyer’s leadoff single in the bottom of the second inning accounted for the other Grizzlies base hit.

Trugman retired the final 15 batters he faced.

Of his 62 pitches, Trugman threw 41 strikes.

Jordan Mejico got the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit over 4 2/3 innings.

Mejico walked two and he fanned a pair of AHS batters.

Roman Lopez single in the top of the fifth inning was the Bulldogs lone hit of the game.

Ayala scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth on a bases loaded walk, and Lopez would score on a Los Osos fielding error.

Aidan Erlandsen walked to lead off the top of the sixth and he would score on a wild pitch to give AHS a 3-0 lead.

Up next: Los Osos will host the No. 1 team in the nation (Corona) on Saturday morning at 11.

And then Ayala welcomes Corona to their field on Tuesday afternoon at 3.

Quotable:

Ayala coach, Brad McGuire: “We came away with a hard-fought 3-0 win despite recording just one hit, a key knock from senior Roman Lopez. Our guys put together quality at-bats and made solid contact, but credit to Los Osos—they kept us off balance and made some great defensive plays. Trugman did exactly what we expect from him—pounded the zone and trusted his defense. Knowing he was on a strict pitch count, he focused on inducing early contact to maximize his innings, finishing with an efficient 62 pitches over six strong frames. Sophomore Easton Sarmiento stepped up in the seventh, shutting the door with two strikeouts to secure the save. Overall, it was a great team win. The guys played for each other, executed when it mattered, and found ways to manufacture runs when we had the chance.”
