Baseball:

South Hills has consistently been one of the San Gabriel Valley’s most elite baseball programs.

Perhaps the biggest reason why is their pitching.

And the Huskies opened the 2025 season with a 1-0 victory over Walnut in their own Pizza Chalet Tournament.

Elias Reyes went five scoreless innings to earn the win.

Reyes surrendered just one hit, issued one walk and struck out nine Walnut batters.

Joseph Moreno provided one scoreless inning in relief and struck out the side.

Justin Romero earned the save by striking out two of the three batters he faced in the top of the seventh inning.

Adam Lenero, JJ Rodriguez and Jackson Russo had one hit apiece to account for the Mustangs offense.

Jacob Pallan got the loss after going all six innings for WHS.

Pallan surrendered one run on six hits.

He walked three and struck out four SHHS batters.

Diego Villarreal singled in Ayden Vieth in the bottom of the fourth inning for the game’s lone run.

Vieth also walked and had a pair of singles.

Former COHS ace Zack Escalera singled in his South Hills debut.

Derrick Wright, Paxton Czunek singled, while Gabriel Guerrero walked and singled in Monday’s win.

Up next: The Huskies will battle La Salle on Wednesday.

The Lancers secured a 3-0 victory over Damien in their season opener.
