Boys Basketball:

If a 24-game win streak and a season were to come to an end, perhaps it was fitting that it took the No. 1 seed in the CIF-SS Division 2AA playoffs to do it.

Camarillo secured a lead toward the end of the first quarter.

And they never trailed again in Friday’s 66-62 victory at Glendora.

GHS fought all the way back to make it a one-possession game late in the fourth period.

But, for the first time in 83 days, the Tartans fell short.

Camarillo used an 11-4 advantage beyond the 3-point line to leave Glendora victorious, and onto to the quarterfinal round against former GHS guard, Josh Giles, and his Centennial Corona Huskies on Tuesday evening.

Jackson Yeates scored a game-high 24 points for the Scorpions, and that included four 3-pointers.

Josh Castaniero provided 13 points in the win, while Evan Dela Paz and Cajun Mike-Price had nine points apiece.

Colton Gray finished one of the most consequential careers in recent memory at GHS with a team-high 17 points.

Gray scored 11 in the second half, as the Tartans fought back from a near double-digit deficit, and he went 3-for-3 from the free-throw line.

Gray also tallied nine rebounds and three assists.

Tanner Grable produced 14 points and three rebounds.

Sebastian Demano and Max Hilgenfeldt scored 11 points apiece.

Demano had seven assists and Hilgenfeldt grabbed three rebounds and dished out a pair of assists.

Vince Montalbo hit three big 3-pointers, and the senior finished with nine points, three rebounds and two assists.

Glendora’s 26 wins is a program best in 20 years.

GHS went 26-6 in the 2004-2005 season.

Their 24-game win streak was a program-best in 33 years.

Congrats to both Coaches Hamlow, their staff and players on a record season.

Quotable:

GHS coach, Gordon Hamlow: “I’m very proud of our effort tonight. We have played with toughness all season, and that gave us a chance to win this evening. Our defense improved in the second half, and that allowed us to keep the game within reach until the final minutes. It speaks to the character of these guys. They are connected with each other and play hard for each other.”
