San Dimas traveled to Anaheim on Friday night in the second round of the CIF-SS Division 3A playoffs.

One of their leading scorers, Nathan Yearout, got into foul trouble, and it cost his most of the third and some of the fourth quarter.

Luke Chavez and Jeremiah Garzon and their boys picked up the slack in a 52-44 victory.

San Dimas led after each of the four quarters, and they join Maranatha and Chino Hills as the final three 210 Prep Sports boys’ programs that are still alive in the postseason.

After an Esperanza fourth-quarter run, Luke Chavez made a huge basket and hit key free throws to secure the win.

Chavez scored a game-high 16 points.

Jeremiah Garzon, an emerging sophomore star, finished with 14 points in the win.

Yearout finished with 12 points, including three 3-pointers.

The SDHS senior scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half.

Alex Van Otterloo led Esperanza with 12 points.

Brody Reeds scored 11 points in the loss.

Up next: The Saints will travel to Burbank to battle Providence in a quarterfinal round contest on Tuesday.

The Pioneers (14-12) secured a 53-51 victory at La Salle.

The tip is set for 7.

Quotable:

SDHS coach, Jeremy Ketterling: “I am very proud of our kids. We played well defensively and showed a lot of toughness, despite not shooting the ball well. We showed a lot of grit when Nathan Yearout picked up his fourth foul early in the third quarter.

SDHS senior, Luke Chavez: “I think we played really good defense tonight. We followed the plan and forced Esperanza to their weaknesses. We only allowed 44 points, which is the plan for every game, to hold teams to the 40’s. I felt my role was to make smart decisions, because they played an extended 2-3 zone, leaving me space in the middle, and my role was to attack the rim since we struggled from 3-point land. The team is really excited about heading into quarterfinals. We’re looking forward with confidence, and it’s important to us to make the semifinal round, because we’ve lost in the second round the last two years.”
