Boys Basketball:
Gahr hung with Ayala in the first, second and fourth quarters of Wednesday’s CIF-SS Division 3AA opener.
Literally.
The Gladiators and Bulldogs matched each other’s 15, 9 and 17 points in the first, second and fourth periods, respectively.
However, AHS went on a 20-9 run in the third quarter and that proved decisive in a 61-50 victory.
Joshua Townsell led Ayala with 14 points.
Jeremy Serrano chipped in with 12 points, including three 3-pointers.
Jaison Joyce scored a game-high 17 points for Gahr.
Josh Pearson provided 15 points in the loss.
Zachary Canellopoulos scored 10 points for Ayala, including five in the decisive third quarter.
Paul Christian finished with eight for AHS.
Up next: The Bulldogs travel to Price on Friday at 7.
The Knights (22-6) claimed a 55-40 victory over Pacifica Christian in their first-round contest.
