Girls Basketball:

It’s been quite the junior campaign for Bonita two-sport star, Tressa Beatty.

Beatty was the starting quarterback for the Bearcats flag football team.

BHS won a Palomares League championship, and they were the only San Gabriel Valley program to go undefeated in the regular season.

Beatty threw for 2,322 yards and 39 TDs.

She is also the point guard for Bonita’s girls’ basketball program.

With three games to play in the regular season, BHS trails first-place Claremont by one game.

But they had one final nonleague contest yesterday.

The Bearcats traveled to Los Angeles and put a 71-39 beatdown on Shalhevet.

Tressa Beatty didn’t just set a new single-game program record, she outscored the Firehawks, 40-39, on her own.

Before going on, to ease Tressa’s humble mind, Beatty was the first to say this was a team accomplishment.

She didn’t want all of the shine.

However, Beatty did have six 3-pointers, and she scored 15 points apiece in the second and third periods.

Brooke Van Duyne and Isabella Sigala contributed seven points apiece.

And Malei’a Reaves chipped in with six points in the win.

Shira Abramson led Shalhevet with 29 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Up next: As mentioned, with three games to play, Bonita trails first-place Claremont by one game.

The Bearcats host last-place Walnut on Tuesday, and then they’ll travel to Glendora and Ayala, respectively, on Thursday and Tuesday, February 4.

Quotable:

Bonita junior, Tressa Beatty: “I was just having fun playing with my teammates yesterday. When I found out (broke the record) I was very surprised and excited. Truthfully, I had no idea until the team room after the whole game that I even broke a record. Our mindset right now is to continue getting better and having fun. We pray before every game, so I think everything is in God’s hands, and we all trust that plan.”
