Bonita earned a share of the Palomares League championship after Wednesday’s 48-31 victory over their visitors from Ayala.

The Bearcats edged the Bulldogs, 8-6, in the 14 head-to-head matches.

But a 7-3 advantage in pins played a crucial role in handing AHS their only league setback.

Both teams were missing key athletes, but you won’t hear Ayala’s Grant Brunier or Bonita’s Rob Froh making any excuses.

In the 2024-25 season, Ayala defeated Walnut, Walnut beat Bonita, and BHS claimed the 17-point victory on Wednesday to set up a 3-way tie for the league title.

As mentioned, BHS secured seven pin fall victories, and they received a win via default at 106 pounds.

AHS had three pins, a tech fall, a major, and a decision at 190 pounds.

The dual began at 106 pounds, and Elijah Lopez was awarded a victory by forfeit.

Bonita took a 6-0 lead, and they wouldn’t trail the entire night.

Jayren Chan got the Bulldogs to within 6-5 after his 17-2 tech fall over Elias Echeveste at 113 pounds.

Nico Vazquez (120), however, gave BHS some breathing room after pinning Devin Carfrae in the first period.

Jacob Kim claimed a 13-1 decision over Tyler Franco at 126, and AHS pulled to within 12-9.

Bonita, though, won four out of the next five matches, and all via pin fall.

Jacob Fernandez (132), Aidan Chairez (145), Nathan Ebel (150) and Tristan Fernandez (157) all stuck their Ayala counterparts.

The biggest pop of the night by the fans was Ebel’s pin at 150.

The Bulldogs’ Ruben Carrillo (138) pinned Lucas Legaspe in just 52 seconds.

Ayala’s Mason Eligio (165) and heavyweight Isaiah Romero picked up pins, while Jacob Rosales defeated Bonita’s Matt Meza, 12-6, at 190 pounds.

BHS got pins from Josh Marshall (175) and Matt Mijares (215).

Up next: AHS and BHS will get their CIF-SS team dual opponents and they’ll be in action next weekend.
