Football:
Glendora made its deepest playoff run since 1989.
After CIF-SS Division 6 victories over Agoura, Rancho Verde and Dana Hills, the Tartans faced off with Murrieta Mesa on Saturday evening at Citrus College.
The Rams booted an early 33-yard field goal, they never trailed, and they went on to claim a 17-7 victory in the Division 6 title game.
To be specific, it was an Alex Krishan field goal that got Murrieta Mesa on the board.
With 13 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Daniel Ritchie scored on a 14-yard TD run, and the Rams advantage swelled to 10-0.
Just 1:50 into the second quarter, Austin Coronado pulled the Tartans to within 10-7 with his 15-yard TD run.
However, the Murrieta Mesa defense kept Glendora off the scoreboard for the final 34:10 of game time.
Royal Randolph’s 3-yard TD run midway through the third quarter gave the Rams some breathing room at 17-7.
The Tartans were far from healthy, but at this point of the season, no one is.
Brandon Coronado, who had taken over the offense in the quarterfinal win at Rancho Verde, got injured late in last week’s 25-21 victory over Dana Hills, and he was unable to compete on Saturday.
His big brother, Austin, rushed for 113 yards on 10 carries, and that included the Tartans lone score of the game in the second quarter.
Simon Zwick rushed for 76 yards on 23 carries.
Sebastian Lawrence completed 6-of-18 for 76 yards.
Tim Johnson caught three passes for 38 yards.
Aspen Suprenant had a 15-yard reception.
Nazir McGlothen also caught a 15-yard pass and forced a fumble on defense.
Grady Lindenmayer recovered a fumble in the loss.
Congrats to the GHS coaching staff and its players on this historic run.
