Football:
For the second consecutive game, the undefeated Mt. SAC football program was tested.
Two weeks ago, the Mounties trailed 21-3 at home to Golden West, but they rallied for a 34-27 victory to secure a National Central Conference title.
MSAC had last week off, and that gets us to last night.
El Camino would take a 17-7 lead midway through the first quarter in an SFCA semifinal in Walnut.
However, Mt. SAC closed the game on a 24-0 run, including a 17-0 advantage in the second half.
El Camino narrowly edged MSAC in total offense (400-380), passing yards (168-151) and rushing (232-229).
Mt. SAC, though, turned the ball over just once, as compared to four times for El Camino.
Devin Miles stepped up big time.
Miles had a game-high 176 yards on 23 carries.
And that included TD runs of 7, 4 and 3 yards.
Noah Fuailetolo completed 9-of-13 for 107 yards.
Fuailetolo’s 41-yard TD pass to Juwan Grant gave the Mounties a 7-0 lead just 38 seconds into Saturday’s showdown.
Far more times than not, regardless of the level of football, it’s unusual for a program to vie for a championship without a reliable kicking game.
And Mt. SAC has one in Jacob Bonilla.
The former Alta Loma Brave had field goals of 29 and 19 yards, and he was 6-for-6 on extra-point attempts.
Samuel Green gained 32 yards on seven carries.
Green’s 2-yard TD run with 9:33 remaining in the fourth quarter gave the Mounties a 48-24 lead.
Jack Benson completed 4-of-6 for 44 yards.
Grant caught three passes for a game-high 66 yards.
Nicolas Ceballos (2-for-32) and Miles (2-for-26) combined for four receptions for 58 yards.
De’shon Thompson had a game-high five catches for 20 yards.
Darrell Tripline tallied 10 tackles, which was tops among either program.
Juruan Hardin had seven tackles, while Kalim Mikhail, Harold Peters and Kaho Tuihalamaka contributed five tackles apiece for the Mounties defense.
Juan Salas had a pair of tackles and a 41-yard pick-six.
Jaylen Crutchfield totaled three tackles, intercepted a pass, and returned it 33 yards.
Teyondre Coleman had two tackles and one interception for MSAC.
El Camino’s Tyler Karen completed 10-of-19 for 168 yards.
He tossed a 58-yard TD pass to Joshua Long, and a 51-yard score to Triston Thomas.
Jaden Moore led the Warriors ground game with 107 yards on 18 carries.
Elijah Holmes finished with 84 yards on six carries, with 60 coming on a first-quarter TD run that gave El Camino its first lead of the game at 14-7.
Long caught three passes for 65 yards, and Thomas had a pair of receptions for 62 yards.
Up next: The Mounties will host Riverside next Saturday at 6 in a battle between the top two programs in the state.
RCC defeated San Diego Mesa, 37-30, in the other semifinal.
Riverside trailed 30-0 early in the third quarter, but they’d close out the win on a 37-0 run.
MSAC (11) and RCC (9) bring a combined 20-game win streak into next week’s showdown.
