Girls Athletes of the Week:
This past week, Marshall Fundamental claimed its first CIF-SS girls team tennis title in school history.
To earn a Division 5 crown, the Lady Eagles had to win three team matches over a six-day period (Monday-Saturday).
On Monday, they started the week with a 12-6 victory over the No. 2 seed from Carpinteria.
Fast forward two days, and Marshall finished in a 9-9 tie at San Marcos High School in Santa Barbara.
After the math was done, the Eagles advanced on games, 73-71.
That set up a winner-take-all scenario with Flintridge Sacred Heart on Friday at the Claremont Tennis Club.
The FSHA-MF title tilt was postponed because of rain, and they eventually met on Saturday afternoon at Marshall.
Yet again, the Eagles found themselves in a 9-9 tie after each of the 18 matches had finished.
And for the second consecutive round, Marshall was the victor because of a narrow edge on games.
This time, it was a 65-63 advantage that secured a D-5 team title.
While every member in an Eagles uniform contributed to their success, it was Hannah Hagiwara and Diana Kasabian that ensured the Marshall Fundamental girls tennis program a spot in the history books.
Hagiwara, the program’s No. 1 singles player, went 9-0.
Seven of Hagiwara’s nine victories came via set scores of 6-0.
Kasabian also went 9-0, and she won four of her nine matches by 6-0 scores.
She also saved her best for last, going 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1 against FSHA.
Hagiwara and Kasabian had literally zero room for error.
In each of the three team wins over Carpinteria, San Marcos and Flintridge Sacred Heart this past week, the Marshall singles players went 8-1, while their doubles teams won just one of nine matches.
As well as both Hagiwara and Kasabian played, Elena Edmonds, the Eagles No. 3 singles player, was critical to a D-5 championship.
Edmonds won six crucial matches in nine tries.
