With less than a minute remaining in the first half, there was no reason to believe that Glendora would leave Moreno Valley happy in Friday’s CIF-SS Division 6 quarterfinal round showdown at Rancho Verde High School.

The Tartans trailed 13-0, and their offense was sputtering.

GHS coach Brandon Rohrer decided a change was needed at quarterback, and sophomore Brandon Coronado made Rohrer look good.

It started with Coronado’s 80-yard TD pass to Tim Johnson with 52 seconds left until halftime.

GHS trailed 13-7 at the break, but they had some much-needed momentum.

Just two minutes and 11 seconds into the third quarter, Coronado gave the Tartans a 14-13 lead after his 40-yard TD run.

GHS has spotted the Mustangs a 13-0 lead, but they would close on a 31-0 run to earn a home game in next week’s D-6 semifinal against Dana Hills.

Coronado scored again on a 13-yard TD run to extend the lead to 21-13.

In a 17-second span late in the fourth quarter, Hunter Lemos booted a 26-yard field goal, and Aidan Yamazaki picked a Rancho Verde pass and returned it 40 yards for a pick six.

Coronado completed 4-of-6 for 95 yards and the long TD to Johnson.

The Tartans’ sophomore carried the ball six times for 74 yards and two scores.

Austin Coronado, Brandon’s big brother, had a huge impact of his own.

Austin had 59 rushing yards on eight carries, and he picked off a pass on defense.

Johnson caught three passes for 85 yards and a score, and he too picked off a pass for the GHS ‘D.’

Simon Zwick carried the ball 14 times for 29 yards.

Caden Smith picked a pass for Glendora.

The Rancho Verde offense got a 52-yard scoring strike from CJ Thompson to Amarion Orange late in the first quarter.

And Gabriel Zavala had field goals of 19 and 31 yards.

Up next: GHS will host Dana Hills on Friday at 7.

The Dolphins (10-2) edged San Dimas, 38-35, on a last-second field goal.
