Football:

Two of the 30 football programs from the 210 Prep Sports coverage zone finished the regular season unscathed.

In previous years, that would earn you a first-round home game against another league’s No. 3 or No. 4 team.

Northview and Bonita both entered the postseason 10-0, and the Vikings were sent to LB Poly, while the Bearcats traveled to LA to battle the Angelus League champs from Cathedral.

Unfortunately, NHS left Long Beach with a season-ending 28-19 loss in a D-4 contest.

BHS, however, got out to a two-score lead, never trailed, and they headed back to La Verne with a 35-20 victory in a D-3 showdown.

The Phantoms scored on the final play of the game to make the score look closer than it really was.

Midway through the first quarter, Dylan Robinson got the Bearcats on the board with a 60-yard punt return for a TD.

Four minutes later, Joseph Lara reeled in a 12-yard TD pass from Travis Lippert to give BHS a 14-0 lead.

Cathedral responded with De’Andre Dukes’ 75-yard punt return, and then CHS quarterback, Zyaire Moore, tied the game at 14-14, with his 9-yard TD run.

Just before the half, Lippert connected with Izaiah Lazarus on an 18-yard TD to give Bonita a 21-14 lead at the break.

That is as close as Cathedral would get.

Noah Mikhail scored on a 6-yard TD run with 6:33 to play in the third quarter.

And Cole Parra sprinted in from seven yards out to close out the offense for BHS.

The Bearcats were obviously thrilled to secure a CIF-SS Division 3 road playoff victory, but they saw their leader, Noah Mikhail go down with a leg injury in the third quarter, and the Texas A&M commit didn’t return.

Up next: The Bearcats will host Edison next Friday in a quarterfinal-round contest.

The Chargers (7-4) shut out their visitors from North Torrance, 24-0, in Huntington Beach.

EHS is ranked No. 44 in MaxPreps’ state poll, while BHS is No. 57.
