Football:
The Bonita football program wrote itself into the school’s record book on Friday night.
The Bearcats cruised to a 33-6 victory at Colony.
BHS scored the game’s first 33 points before Elijah Ybanez rumbled in from two yards out.
The win secured an outright Sierra League championship.
It’s the program’s first league title in 12 years.
Far more impressive, however, was running their regular season slate at 10-0.
It’s the first unbeaten run since 1999.
Matt Mijares got the Bearcats on the board when he tackled a Colony running back in the end zone for a safety.
Joseph Lara’s 7-yard TD run gave Bonita a 9-0 lead.
Noah Mikhail scored on a 3-yard TD run.
Travis Lippert and Dylan Robinson hooked up on TD connections of 7 and 6 yards, respectively.
Stephen Lenehan closed out the scoring with a 21-yard field goal.
Lippert finished his first campaign with 28 regular-season TD passes and four picks.
On their way to a Sierra League title, BHS outscored Glendora, Claremont, Los Osos, Charter Oak and Colony by a combined margin of 169-68.
Among the 30 football programs this site covers, Bonita was sixth in points scored (374) and second in least points allowed (116) to Northview.
The Vikings and Bearcats were the only two unbeaten programs within the 210 Prep Sports coverage zone.
And Bonita was the only school that had undefeated regular season runs by both its football and flag football teams.
Up next: BHS will get its first-round opponent on Sunday morning at 10.
