Football:

Upland and Ayala met up Friday night in Chino Hills.

And while both programs had identical 2-5 (overall) and 0-2 (in Baseline League) records, UHS and AHS combined to put on one of week-eight’s best games.

Trailing 28-24, and with 1:31 to play, Lequand Jackson tossed a 24-yard TD pass to Osric Randolph for what turned out to be the game-winning points.

Ayala drove to the UHS 26-yard line.

And with 12 seconds to play, the Bulldogs 43-yard field goal attempt came up short.

Lequand Jackson also scored on an 8-yard TD run earlier in the night.

Upland also got a 12-yard TD run from Jerome Smith, and a 24-yard field goal by Jackson Haudoceour.

Alex Way had a solid night behind center for AHS.

He completed 17-of-26 for 279 yards, including three TD passes.

Ayala’s Daniel Partida forced a fumble, which was recovered by Dylan Aguilar.

Jedi Hernandez scored his first receiving TD on a 37-yard pass from Way.

After another Upland TD, Hernandez would tie the game at 14-14 with a 2-yard TD run.

On their next possession, the Bulldogs recovered a UHS fumble.

AHS cashed it in, when, on the very next play, Way found Jay Boyd on a 39-yard TD pass.

Dawaun Nettingham had an interception for the Bulldogs’ defense.

Ayala ran the ball 22 times for 92 yards and one TD.

Jedi Hernandez had 16 carries for 88 yards and the 2-yard score.

Ayala caught 17 passes for 279 yards and three TDs.

Brenton Smith had four receptions for 98 yards.

Nettingham totaled three catches for 53 yards.

Hernandez finished with four receptions for 50 yards and two scores.

Blake Frausto caught four passes for 17 yards.

Quotable:

Ayala coach, AJ Gracia: “Both teams went into the game 2-5 and you would have never known it by the way both teams competed all night. Both programs never gave up and it was a great game to be a part of. It was a back-and-forth game and there were plays made all over the field. They just executed down the stretch, and we missed our opportunities in the two-minute drill. I have nothing but respect for Coach Thomas’ program and their staff who did a great job tonight.

Our players made so many plays on both sides of the ball. Our OL really established themselves early with Jedi running and catching the ball. Alex Way played his best game of the season, making big play after big play. Jeffery Boyd, Jedi, and BJ Smith had explosive pass catches all night. Our defense caused three turnovers and had to deal with terrible field position all night and held their own. I’m proud of my staff and players for fighting till the end. We are moving on to another great team in Damien, and we’re looking to find our first win in the Baseline League play.”
