Football:
The writing was on the wall early in Etiwanda’s Baseline League opener at Damien.
On the first drive of the game, the Eagles quickly drove to the DHS 20-yard line.
However, Damien recovered an Etiwanda fumble, and they cashed it in shortly thereafter.
The Spartans took advantage of every EHS miscue, it seemed, and they cruised to a 45-10 victory.
Damien led 45-3 with a running clock in the fourth quarter when Etiwanda quarterback Keegan Campuzano hit Chad Wakumoto Jr. on a 43-yard TD pass.
The DHS defense controlled throughout, and Campuzano was their prime target.
And that included a couple of sacks by Declan Becher.
After recovering the initial fumble, Damien turned it into seven points, as Gavin Williams caught a 39-yard TD pass from quarterback, Isaiah Arriaza.
With a 7-0 lead, James Taylor and Arriaza had consecutive 14-yard scoring runs to open up an advantage of 21-0.
Carlos Flores got EHS on the board with a 26-yard field goal with 2:13 to play in the first half.
Instead of allowing the Eagles to have some mini momentum at the break, Malachi McFarland rumbled in with 31 seconds on the clock, and DHS led, 28-7.
Arriaza opened the second-half scoring with an 11-yard TD run, and then, after blocking a third-quarter Etiwanda punt, Mekhi Freeman recovered the ball for a 1-yard TD.
Preston Yado went 6-for-6 on extra-point attempts, and he closed out the Spartans’ scoring with a 25-yard field goal late in the third quarter.
As mentioned, Campuzano and Wakumoto hooked up on a 43-yard TD for the Eagles.
Up next: Damien will travel to Upland, and Etiwanda visits Chino Hills.
