Flag Football:

Could Bonita be held to just 113 yards of total offense and still remain undefeated?

Yep.

The Bearcats got a 14-yard TD pass from Tressa Beatty to sophomore Haley Kurey in the first half.

And the BHS defense would do the rest in a 7-0 victory over GHS at Louie Pompei Memorial Park in Glendora.

Bonita’s defense didn’t just pitch a shutout, Kayla Heinlein, Brianna Sandmark and Leah Reynolds each picked a Glendora pass.

Heinlein had a team-high seven tackles.

Victoria Johnson had a big night with four tackles, including a pair of sacks.

Malia Misawa and Sandmark had three flag pulls apiece.

Beatty was 8 of 18 for 71 yards.

She had the TD pass to Kurey and one interception.

Kody McKinney led the BHS ground game with 18 yards on three carries.

Bonita had just 30 rushing yards.

Laney Sweeney (2-for-26), Riley Navarro (2-17) and Sandmark (2-12) combined for six receptions for 55 yards.

Bonita also got some help from Claremont.

The Wolfpack defeated Ayala, 31-14, at CHS.

That means BHS (11-0, 4-0) has a two-game lead over AHS (16-5, 2-2) with just two Palomares League games to play.

The Bearcats can do no worse than a Palomares League co-championship.

Paola Casas led the GHS defense with five flag pulls, while Sofia Freking and Hannah Lin had three tackles apiece.

Emily Husung picked off Beatty.

Rylee Franks was 9 for 16 for 94 yards and a pair of interceptions.

Olivia Martin had five catches for 56 yards.

Quotable:

Bonita coach, Michael Mann: “Our defense was the difference tonight. Victoria Johnson wasn’t going to let this team lose tonight. She left it all on the field. Right behind her was Kayla Heinlein, with another impressive performance flag pulling. The defense had our sideline and the fans hyped up. It felt like a home game the way everyone was cheering when we got stops. Glendora played hard and never gave up. We just made a few more plays than they did, but they should certainly be proud of their effort. Tressa’s pass to Haley Kurey ultimately was the difference.”

Glendora coach, Greg Bidoli: “Bonita is a very talented and well-coached team. I’m very proud of how our girls came to play tonight. We’ll move on and prepare for Ayala.”
