Football:

How would Maranatha respond to last Saturday’s 56-14 thumping at the hands of Rio Hondo Prep?

It was MHS’ first loss of the season.

They responded very well.

Maranatha got out to an early 28-0 lead and the Minutemen defeated their visitors from Arroyo, 45-32, on Thursday evening.

Luke McNulty found Luke Hanrahan on a 15-yard scoring strike to give MHS a 7-0 lead.

Miles O’Malley would score the next 21 points of the game.

His first, a 40-yard TD run into the west end zone double the advantage to 14-0.

McNulty and O’Malley hooked up on an 84-yard TD catch and run.

And then the MHS senior sprinted into the east end zone from 55 yards out.

Just when it looked like Maranatha would run away with the game, Arroyo quarterback Angel Casillas scored on a two-yard run.

Casillas rumbled in behind center on the two-point conversion.

The Knights then recovered the onside kick.

And shortly thereafter, Casillas hit Nathan Dominguez on a 30-yard scoring strike, and again, Casillas ran in the two-point attempt.

With 1:35 to play in the first half, Arroyo pulled to within 28-16 of Maranatha.

However, Maranatha had a trick play up their sleave.

McNulty tossed a short pass to Niko Vergara, who pitched it to Miles O’Malley for a 48-yard touchdown down the visitor’s sideline.

And on the first drive of the second half, Nick Goodman picked off Casillas and brought it back 15 yards for a pick-six.

Casillas scored another 1-yard TD in the third quarter for the Knights, and Romeo Arevalo had a 12-yard TD run in the fourth to close out the scoring for Arroyo.

In between the two AHS scores was an Owen Meleka 20-yard field goal.

Nathaniel Behzadi, who was brought up from the JV team, had a last-minute pick of Casillas at the MHS 1-yard line to quell a final Knights’ touchdown.

Up next: The Minutemen travel to La Canada next Friday at 7.

The Spartans are 3-0 so far and they’ve only allowed seven points.
