Flag Football:

Bonita was held to 34 points under their season average through the first two games.

And yet the Bearcats still found a way to win.

BHS left Upland with a 12-6 victory on Tuesday afternoon.

The defense stood tall for the Bearcats, including the play of freshman Grace Tolan, who was called by Coach Mike Mann, “the player of the game.”

Tolan had a team-high six tackles.

Tressa Beatty completed 15-of-23 for 130 yards.

Beatty tossed one TD pass, ran for another and the BHS junior was picked one time.

Bonita only gained 31 yards on 12 carries.

Kody McKinney (15) and Haley Kurey accounted for 29 of those 31 yards.

Laila Washington caught four passes for 34 yards and had one TD reception.

Riley Navarro had three receptions for 31 yards.

Brianna Sandmark (3-for-20) and Maddy Simison (2-for-24) combined for five catches and 44 receiving yards.

Laney Sweeney had a 14-yard reception in Tuesday’s win.

Quotable:

Bonita coach, Mike Mann: “When Bonita needed to step up big on defense, Grace Tolan played out of her mind. It was special to watch. Upland is getting better and they are very well coached. No one is going to want to play them at the end of the year.”

Up next: The Bearcats host Yorba Linda (3-0-1) on Wednesday night at 7:15.
