Baseball:
Talk about a pitchers’ duel.
Arcadia’s Gabriel Lopez narrowly bested Westlake’s Dylan Volantis on Friday.
Lopez went all seven innings, and he allowed one run on two hits.
He issued one walk and struck out 11 Warriors’ batters.
Nolan Johnson singled in the top of the fourth and he would score on a two-out base hit from Noah Stead.
Volantis went the distance for WHS, and he surrendered a pair of unearned runs on three hits.
Volantis walked one and fanned 10 AHS batters.
Arcadia scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to edge Westlake, 2-1, and earned a spot in Tuesday’s D-2 semifinal.
In that decisive sixth-inning, Aaron Prieto and Jordan Vogel were hit by pitch.
With two outs, Damian Catano hit a sharp ground ball to the Warriors shortstop, the throw to first was high and Catano was called safe.
That allowed Prieto to tie the game at 1-1.
However, the Westlake first basemen turned his back on Vogel, and he wisely sprinted home for what turned out to be the game-winning run.
That single ground ball to short turned into two Arcadia runs and three or four Westlake ejections.
Vogel also singled in Friday’s win.
Maverick Silva singled and Avery Truesdale reached base on a walk, and he was hit by a Volantis pitch.
Up next: AHS will travel to Newhall to battle Hart on Tuesday for a spot in the D-2 finals at stake.
The Indians (24-5) shut out their host from Arlington, 3-0.
