Baseball:
Rio Hondo Prep won five of its last six regular season games to earn a spot in the CIF-SS playoffs.
The Kares hosted Bolsa Grande in Tuesday’s Division 8 wild card game.
And the Matadors pounded out a 9-2 victory.
BGHS out-hit RHP, 20-7, and they had a 6-1 advantage in extra-base hits.
Seven Rio Hondo Prep errors cost the Kares five runs.
Joshua Taflinger got the loss after allowing eight runs (four earned) on nine hits over his 3 1/3 innings.
Taflinger walked two and fanned a pair of Matadors.
Alan Vargas went 4-for-5, with two doubles, an RBI and he scored a pair of runs.
Samuel Montes de Oca singled twice, had a pair of doubles, scored two runs and had one RBI.
Joey Sangenito singled, doubled and drove in two runs.
Mikey Haley went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.
Martin Cobarrubias singled, scored and drew a walk with the bases loaded.
Junior Rizo singled and scored.
Alan Vargas went the distance, and he allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits.
Vargas issued six walks and he struck out five RHP batters.
Nate Curtis singled and scored a pair of runs.
Brayden Vinton had an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Noah Penunuri went 2-for-3.
Taflinger drew a pair of walks and singled.
Diego Householder walked and doubled.
Yannick Diaz drew three walks in Tuesday’s loss.
