Boys Soccer:

Winning a first CIF championship is an incredible feat.

But to do so in overtime makes it even a little more exciting.

Maranatha did that on Saturday night.

The Minutemen edged Wilson, 2-1 in OT, to claim a CIF-SS Division title.

George Peterson got MHS on the board first.

Peterson was brought down in the box, and he would convert on the penalty kick.

To their credit, Wilson of Hacienda Heights, tied the game at 1-1 with just one minute to play in the first half.

After a scoreless second half, the Wildcats and Minutemen headed into overtime.

And with four minutes to play in the second overtime, Caleb Freeman got the ball from Peterson.

MHS coach Walker Haynes described it this way: “Caleb’s shot is on frame, and Wilson’s keeper can’t corral the ball, and it hits off his arm and rolls into the goal. A Golden Goal for Maranatha.”

Lorenzo Rodriguez had yet another dominant effort in goal for the Minutemen.

Up next: MHS will host Woodlake on Tuesday in the first round of the CIF State Division 5 playoffs.

The Tigers (17-10-4) will be making a 187-mile trip to battle the Minutemen.

Quotable:

Maranatha coach, Walker Haynes: “Talent, chemistry and hard work, this Maranatha team is loaded with all three, and they continue to rise to the challenge again and again. Each game in this tournament has been more exciting than the one before; Saturday’s double overtime 2-1 win against Wilson was a non-stop, heart pounding 96 minutes of high intensity soccer. On the biggest stage, their never quit mentality helped find a way to secure the win and give Maranatha boys soccer the first CIF Championship in program history.”
