Girls Soccer:
The only thing as exciting as playing for a CIF-SS championship for the Monrovia girls soccer program is the path they traveled to get there.
The Wildcats defeated Los Altos, Costa Mesa and Ocean View in that order, and each game was decided by one goal.
Then, in the CIF-SS Division 4 semifinal, Monrovia and St. Genevieve went into overtime before the Wildcats won on penalty kicks, 4-2.
On a night where it felt like the entire community came out to support Monrovia, the stadium was packed and electric.
The Lady Wildcats would not let them down.
Monrovia struck first 20 minutes into the first half.
Senior captain Sofia Chiovare threw the ball into her freshman sister, Gabi Chiovare.
Gabi crossed it to junior Ava Hackworth, who put it in the back of the net.
It was her 13th goal of the year.
St. Genevieve had last minute heroics in stoppage time by drawing a foul on Monrovia goalie, Miya Whoolery.
Sophomore forward Angelinne Mazariegos hit the penalty kick, sending the game to overtime.
After two grueling overtimes, MHS prevailed in penalty kicks, 4-2.
Miya Whoolery redeemed herself and blocked the penalty kick to secure victory, and Monrovia is headed to the first CIF finals since 2006.
Captains Sofia Chiovare and Audrey Mendoza, along with Naeemah Browne and Ava Hackworth scored one penalty kick apiece for MHS.
Up next: The Wildcats will face Louisville next weekend, as CIF has yet to select the date or location.
The Royals (21-3) defeated Walnut, 4-2, in their semifinal round contest.
