Wrestling:
Thanks to the Eagles program for this report:
On February 3rd, Marshall Fundamental hosted the first ever wrestling tournament on our campus.
We christened the main gym (built in 2015) by hosting the six-team Mission Valley League finals.
Marshall didn’t join the MVL until 2012, and wrestling wasn’t a sport on the Pasadena campus until the 2019-2020 season.
The Eagles secured their first MVL title by dethroning and defeating the perennial league champs from Arroyo.
The Knights had won eight consecutive league titles, and 14 out of the past 16 years.
But Marshall would edge Arroyo, 36-35, back on January the 11th.
On Saturday, Marshall advanced nine wrestlers to the championship match for their weight class.
Four of the nine secured individual titles, including freshman Keen Velasco (106), junior Isaac Benavidez (132), sophomore Diego McDonald (150), and senior Olivia Knight (235).
The other five locked up second-place medals, and that list consists of junior Xavier Velazquez (144), senior Amireth Dominguez-Guevara (145), junior Siwon Shin (165), sophomore Garabet Mamarian (190), and 215-pound freshman, Elijah Lain.
Additionally, the Eagles had four third-place finishes.
That includes junior Mauricio Moreno-Jones (120), junior Chris Murillo (138), sophomore Arianna Solis (170) and junior Andrew Velez (285)
And finally, two more Marshall grapplers settled for fourth place at day’s end (sophomore Parisa Vazira (130), and junior Betsy Merriam (190).
Marshall hosted approximately 150 matches throughout the day, and nearly 200 competitors.
Marshall wrapped up their season, with the boys team finishing 6-0 in league and 16-1 overall.
The girls team secured their first league victory this year and wrapped the season at 3-7.
