Football:

Marquis Monroe played his final game for the Ayala High School football program on Friday night.

And the AHS senior did exactly what he’s done for his entire career in Chino Hills.

He left his heart and soul on the football field.

Perhaps it was better described by Coach Reams: “Ayala had another big game from Marquis Monroe in the loss. Marquis, Ayala’s Mr. Everything player, caught passes, ran the ball, broke up passes, made tackles and left every ounce of everything he had on the field. As a matter of fact, all the Bulldogs left it all on the field. They battled all the way until the end, but we ended up not having enough to pull out a win tonight.”

The Bulldogs fell in the CIF-SS Division 4 opener to their visitors from Culver City, 38-28, at Ayala High School.

The game featured (CC 28, AHS 21) 49 first-half points, but both defenses were able to slow the other down in the second half.

Ayala gained 139 yards on the ground and that included two scores.

Monroe carried the ball 19 times for 103 yards and one TD.

He also caught four passes for 87 yards.

Maximus Barroso completed 17-of-29 pass attempts for 180 yards.

Barroso tossed a pair of TD passes and interceptions.

He also carried the ball eight times for 13 yards and one score.

Drew Amico did what Drew Amico does.

He quietly caught a team-high 10 passes for 73 yards and a touchdown.

Jaden Valenzula had two receptions for 20 yards and that included one TD catch.

Nick Lane was 4-for-4 on extra-point attempts, and he nailed a 38-yard field goal that would have tied the game for AHS, but a false-start penalty backed them up five yards, and the snap went through the holder’s hand.

The Bulldogs recovered an onside attempt on the opening kickoff of the second half to gain an extra possession, and after scoring to tie the game at 28, they attempted another onside kick, which they recovered.

But it was ruled that Ayala had touched the ball before it had traveled the necessary 10 yards.

Editor’s Note: A huge thanks to Coach Reams who went home every Friday night and put together a summary to send me by 1 am, and only then would he finally go to bed. Thank you, Randy!

And congrats to Ayala on being the 2023 Mountain West League champions.
