Football:
And that’s why they play the game.
Heading into Friday’s showdown with visiting Torrance, Rio Hondo Prep had a 19-percent chance of defeating the Tartars.
At least that’s what CalPreps projected.
The underestimation of the Kares didn’t stop there.
According to MaxPreps, Torrance is 116 teams better (240-356) than RHP in their state rankings.
But Rio Hondo Prep coach Mark Carson and his players never had a doubt that by the end of the night, RHP would head home 6-0.
And that’s exactly what they did in a 29-9 victory at Kare Park.
Torrance got on the board first, as Christopher Ramirez booted a 34-yard field goal at 6:47 in the first quarter.
Five minutes later, however, Nate Curtis would rumble in from seven yards out and RHP would never trail again.
Curtis carried the ball seven times for 62 yards and that included TD runs of 7 and 29 yards.
Noah Penunuri had a game-high 114 yards on 15 carries.
And Penunuri had scoring runs of 28 and 10 yards.
The Kares had a 326-229 advantage in total offense, but surprisingly, the Tartars finished just 13 yards rushing less (169-156) than Rio Hondo Prep.
Alex Mustain completed 7-of-9 for 157 yards.
Tyler Dang caught three passes for 74 yards, Joshua Taflinger had two receptions for 48 yards and Curtis reeled in a pair of passes for 35 yards.
Jake Silverman’s 6-yard scoring run with 46 seconds to play was the Tartars only TD of the night.
Silverman carried the ball 11 times for 72 yards.
Rainn Pollock and Andy Xu both picked off passes for the RHP defense.
Up next: The Kares host King’s Academy (2-1) from Sunnyvale next Friday at 7.
