Girls Tennis:
After seven consecutive away matches to start the season, Maranatha was finally “home” (as much as Pasadena High School can be called home for MHS) for the second league contest of the season.
Once Maranatha’s primary Olympic League competition, the Heralds are the only traditional league school to have beaten the Lady Minutemen since 2012, doing so twice in 2016 and claiming the league title with 8 seniors.
Maranatha had had a 36-league match winning streak up to that point.
After the graduation of those seniors and the departure of their coach, WC’s program spiraled down in the ensuing years until they were not able to field a team in 2021.
They started rebuilding their program and were able to field a team last season.
The newly restarted program is still young, but is headed in the right direction under the dedicated coaching of Scott Penner.
MHS got out of the gates quickly, posting a 5-1 advantage after the 1st round, with No. 1 Natalie Arminak losing, 6-3, in a very tight well-played set against the Heralds’ No. 1 player.
The teams split the second round, 3-3, giving Maranatha an 8-4 lead, before closing the final round, 4-2, securing the 12-6 win.
Once again, it was a well-balanced effort that secured the win for Maranatha, with each spot in the lineup accounting for at least one win.
No. 1 and No. 2 Doubles Mia Huang/Mia Su and Esmee Eaton/Sofia Celis swept, with 6-2, 6-1, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 scorelines respectively.
Arminak went 6-1, 6-0 in her final two sets, while No. 2 Grace Yang went 4-6, 6-1, 6-0. MHS’s No. 3’s, Kathryn Khalil and Laura Garabedian/Madi White each claimed one 6-0 set apiece.
With the win, Maranatha moves to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in league play.
On Tuesday, they host last season’s league runner-up, Valley Christian, in what promises to be a highly contested affair, as each of their matches last year went down to the wire.
The Defenders will be seeking their first win over the Lady Minutemen since Coach Arthur Hsieh took over Maranatha’s program in 2012.
