Softball:
After going a combined 0-5 in Palomares League games against first-place Ayala and second-place Bonita, and never allowing more than three runs, Bridget Nemeth and her Tartans secured their most significant victory of the season.
On Thursday, GHS scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning to defeat Ayala, 4-2, in Chino Hills.
It was the Bulldogs first setback in all of 2023.
Just 15 days ago, Glendora was one out from beating AHS, but Taelor Walker’s two-out, two-RBI base hit sent the Tartans home disappointed.
Nemeth went all 10 innings to earn the win, and she allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits.
She issued a pair of walks and struck out 11.
Ayala got single runs in the bottom of the fourth and seventh innings.
Walker doubled and then scored to give AHS a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Taylor Black drew a one-out walk.
Three batters later, Marisa Dominguez tied the game at 2-2 with a two-out single.
Tehya Banks and Lilanna Acosta had two hits apiece for Ayala.
Karson Zavala and Allie Lukaszewicsz went five innings apiece.
Zavala allowed one earned run on two hits.
She walked three and struck out eight GHS batters.
Lukaszewicsz surrendered a pair of unearned runs in the 10th.
In all, she allowed two hits, walked a pair and struck out six Tartans.
In the top of the 10th, and with one out, Ryan Speh and Nemeth drew walks, and Makenna Coleman singled to load the bases.
Ayva Cabuena reached on an error, and it allowed two GHS players to score with what turned out to be the game winning runs.
Kaylie Winovitch drove in a run on a sac fly in the fifth to catch AHS at 1-1.
Speh walked, singled, scored and had an RBI.
Samantha Meyer singled and scored for GHS.
