Boys Tennis:

Given the strength of the top teams, if you offered Maranatha the opportunity to finish second in league, they would’ve taken the offer every time.

The Minutemen entered today with just that opportunity.

Coach Arthur Hsieh knew that his team was susceptible to not being at their best, as is usually the case on Senior Day, when seniors are often nervous and thrown off their game with the emotion of the day, as well with the presence of family, friends, and faculty.

Wildwood showed up short on players, only fielding two singles players and two doubles teams.

However, they were their best players, who they rearranged to give them their best chance of winning.

It almost worked, as their newly formed No. 1 doubles team, made up of singles players, defeated seniors, Joshua Im and Shahe Yerevanian in the opening set.

While that team swept Maranatha’s doubles teams, the Minutemen swept their No. 2 doubles team, each by a 6-0 score.

Maranatha’s singles weren’t able to pull out a win against Wildwood’s top two singles player, with senior, Victor Qiao, coming the closest, 4-6.

At the end, though they weren’t at their best, the Minutemen managed to pull out the win to finish second in league, within one win of the league title.

The Minutemen now head tomorrow to the two-day Coastal League Individuals Tournament at UCLA, where all of their players have qualified to participate.

Im is the defending tournament doubles champion.

The CIF-SS playoffs start next week.

The draws will be released on Monday.
