Baseball:
It wasn’t that South Hills lost a Hacienda League game on Friday that is newsworthy.
After all, the Huskies still hold a one-game lead over second-place Walnut, and they face last-place Rowland next week in a two-game set to close out the 2023 season.
Moreover, South Hills already secured a sweep of the Mustangs a couple weeks back.
But losing 3-2 at Diamond Bar because of three bases loaded walks in the first inning was unusual.
Joseph Moreno got the loss after allowing three runs on one hit and four walks in 2/3 of an inning.
Moreno struck out a pair of DBHS batters.
Justin Romero and Daniel Camou combined to got 5 1/3 scoreless innings and both struck out four Brahmas each.
In the first inning, Noah Moya was hit by pitch, David Fiallo walked and Maddox Bernardino reached base on a bunt single.
Robert Murphy, Ethan McNeil and Matthew Vargas drew bases loaded walks.
Carlos Cornejo and CJ Alinas had the other two Brahmas hits.
JJ Smith went five innings and allowed two runs on six hits.
Smith walked one and struck out one SHHS batter.
Sean Gonzalez went two scoreless, allowing two hits, not issuing a walk and fanning a pair of Huskies.
Noah Malone singled, doubled and drove in both runs for the Huskies.
Matt Moreno singled and scored.
Marcos Rosales walked, singled and scored.
Gabe Martinez, Luke Bauer, Dom Prieto and Malaki Pelayo had one hit apiece for South Hills.
Up next: South Hills hosts La Quinta on Saturday morning at 11, and then the Huskies travel to Rowland on Wednesday at 3:30.
