Baseball:
Charter Oak opened Valle Vista League play with a two-game sweep of Covina.
The Chargers claimed a 5-3 victory on Friday, and Athen Malone shut down the Colts’ bats on Saturday.
COHS got out to a 6-0 lead and defeated CHS, 6-3.
Malone went five scoreless and hitless innings to earn the win.
Malone and two others combined on a no-hitter, but Covina scored three unearned runs on some sixth-inning errors.
He issued one walk and struck out four.
Andres Ortiz and Chris Gonzalez provided one scoreless and hitless inning of relief apiece.
Jaime Lopez got the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits over his 4 1/3 innings.
He walked two and struck out one.
Mike Bang went 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for Covina.
Bang allowed one hit, didn’t issue a walk and struck out one COHS batter.
Malone helped his own cause with a double and two RBIs.
Anthony Vasquez walked, singled, doubled and scored twice.
Dominic Almazan doubled and scored.
Samuel Morales singled and scored.
Josiah Martinez went 2-for-2 with an RBI.
Diego Ortiz drove in a run on a sac fly, and Chris Gonzalez walked and scored.
