Boys Tennis:

In their second and final contest of the season, Maranatha and California Academy of Math/Sciences (CAMS) not only faced one another, but also the 96-degree heat (well over 100 degrees on court).

It was clear early on that Maranatha was the fitter of the two teams, as the Minutemen looked fresher all day, leading to a dominant afternoon.

The first round concluded with the set of the day, as #1 singles Tim Huang avenged a 1-6 defeat earlier in the season to the Rebels #1, Shrey Mehta.

Down 3-4, and with both players laboring, Huang dug deeper, winning the final three games to close out with a 6-4 win.

That put the Minutemen ahead 6-0 after the first round, with #2 Nico Engling and #3 Laci Szabo, winning, 6-2 and 6-0; and #1 doubles Jordan Miao/Joshua Im, #2 Sean Tang/Sawyer Tarampi, and #3 Shahe Yerevanian/Victor Qiao also winning decisively, 6-0, 6-1, 6-2.

The second round was more of the same, with singles winning, 6-0, 6-2, 6-2, and doubles winning, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1, giving MHS the win while leading, 12-0.

At this point, head coach, Arthur Hsieh, put in all five of his reserves.

Jonathan Jo/Hayden Geeting teamed together for the first time and won, 6-3, while Eli Su/Jeff Jin lost 3-6 to the Rebels’ #2 doubles team, and Matt Yip, playing singles for the first time, lost 1-6 to the #2 singles player. #3 Szabo lost to #1 Mehta, 5-7 after leading, 5-4, while#3 Yerevanian/Qiao lost to the #1’s by the same score, concluding the overall match at 14-4.

The D4 #5 ranked Minutemen (10-0 overall; 6-0 in league) get right back at it on Wednesday, as they take on the Moors of Alhambra in a non-league contest.
