Boys Tennis:
Maranatha and Geffen Academy at UCLA came into today’s contest unbeaten both on the season and in league. They split their matches the last two years, with Geffen winning handily last season.
With the Bruins missing their top two players, they were forced to dilute their lineup, giving the Minutemen an opportunity to capitalize. With a 6-0 opening round, it looked like MHS was going to run away with the match, even though 3 of the sets went, 6-4.
With singles #1 Tim Huang getting his second 6-0 set, #2 Nico Engling soon followed with a 6-0 set of his own, after winning 6-1 in the first round. That put the Minutemen ahead, 8-0. Then it was deja vu, as shades of the South Pasadena match emerged. In that match, MHS built a large lead, only to have the Tigers win 6 of the final 7 sets to tie the match at 9-9 (MHS won on games, 80-70).
The Bruins won the final 4 sets of the second round to trim the deficit to 8-4. The final round was split, 3-3, giving Geffen 7 wins in the final 10 sets. Once again, it was Huang (6-0) and Engling (6-1) who led the way. #1 doubles Jordan Miao/Joshua Im rebounded from a surprise second round loss – 6-7(5) – to dominate their third set, 6-0.
The Minutemen also got contributions from #3 singles, Laci Szabo (6-4), #2 doubles, Sawyer Tarampi/Sean Tang (6-4), and #3 doubles, Shahe Yerevanian/Matt Yip (6-2), each winning their first round sets.
With the victory, Maranatha (6-0; 3-0) takes the Coastal League lead, one game ahead of Geffen.
The Minutemen take a break from league play next week, as they play at Div. 3 Mark Keppel, a consistent powerhouse and perennial Almont League champion.
