Boys Tennis:
In their first year in the Coastal League, Maranatha continues to face competition like California Academy of Math/Sciences for the first time; at least for the first time in Coach Arthur Hsieh’s 10-year tenure.
In a tougher match than the score indicates, the Rebels challenged the Minutemen and forced them to focus and play winning tennis. Though the scores seem lopsided, many games went to deuce before the Minutemen were able to prevail.
Singles (7-2) was paced by #2 Nico Engling, who was able to stay composed to overcome a 4-5 deficit to win his first set 7-6(5) against CAMS #2, Michael De Castro, before upsetting #1 Shrey Mehta with attacking, penetrating tennis, 6-3. He then went on to blitz #3 Magnus Allen, 6-0. #1 Tim Huang went 1-6 against Mehta in a deuce-filled contest, before settling down to dispatch De Castro and Allen, 6-1, 6-1. The improving #3 Laci Szabo went 6-1, 6-4 with Allen and De Castro before succumbing to Mehta, 1-6.
Doubles (8-1) made a statement early by sweeping the first round 6-2, 6-1, 6-0. They dominated most of their sets, though #2 Sean Tang/Sawyer Tarampi had to come from behind in the second round to overcome a tough #1 Rebels team, 7-5. That team defeated #3 Shahe Yerevanian/Matt Yip, 6-4, in the last set of the day.
#1 Jordan Miao/Joshua Im swept, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, while Tang/Tarampi won 6-1, 7-5 before being subbed out for Eli Su/Jeffrey Jin, who beat the #3, 6-3. Yerevanian/Yip went 6-0, 6-2, 4-6 on the day, showing flashes of their potential.
Thursday’s home league match against Geffen Academy at UCLA will be a match of two unbeatens as the Minutemen (5-0; 2-0 in league) and the Bruins (4-0; 2-0) face off for sole possession of first place in league. Though not in the same league at the time, they faced each other each of the last two seasons, splitting the two contests, with Geffen handily winning last season.
