Boys Tennis:
Thanks to Maranatha for this report:
Maranatha knew today’s match at San Gabriel would reveal where they are as a team.
Since their opening match against Azusa was so lopsided, they didn’t really have a gauge of where they are relative to other schools.
San Gabriel would give them an idea.
Coming in with a 3-1 record, with impressive victories in hand, the Matadors are fielding their strongest team in years.
The Minutemen knew it would be a tight match that could go either way.
The first round ended with the team even at 3-3, with SGHS sweeping singles (#1 Tim Huang, 2-6; #2 Nico Engling, 2-6; #3 Laci Szabo, 4-6) and MHS sweeping doubles (#1 Jordan Miao/Josh Im, 6-2; #2 Shahe Yerevanian/Matt Yip, 6-0; #3 Sean Tang/Sawyer Tarampi, 6-0).
The second round proved to be the deciding round.
Miao/Im had another strong set, winning 6-2, while Tang/Tarampi jumped out quickly against the #1’s, never letting them get settled, and won convincingly, 6-1.
Huang and Szabo were unable to win their sets, leaving the score tied, 5-5. Engling pulled through, applying consistent pressure on the #3, and winning 6-0.
The last set of the round was a nip and tuck affair, with Yerevanian/Yip finding a way to outlast the #2’s, 7-5. That win pulled MHS ahead, 7-5.
The third round saw both teams fight hard, knowing what was on the line.
Maranatha pulled out to an 8-5 lead as Miao/Im played urgent and dominant tennis (6-1).
The Matadors responded with an equally dominant 6-0 win over Szabo, bringing the score to 8-6.
Tang/Tarampi overcame an 0-2 deficit to reel off 6 consecutive games (6-2) to put the Minutemen in the driver’s seat, 9-6.
Huang sealed the victory with a dominant 6-0 victory of his own. Leading 4-1,
Yerevanian/Yip were unable to close the door, allowing the #1’s to come back and prevail, 7-5.
The final set was close, as Engling and the #1, Jaxon Huynh, held serve the entire way.
Serving for the set at 5-4, with set-point in hand, Engling double faulted on the deciding point, evening the score at 5-5.
With darkness now in play, both players struggled to see the ball.
It seemed to affect Engling a bit more, as Hunyh rode his momentum to a 7-5 victory, giving the Matadors their 8th point.
The road only gets tougher for the Div. 4 Minutemen (2-0). They play at Div. 3 South Pasadena (3-0) on Tuesday, having lost 5-13 to the Tigers last season.
The Minutemen will be looking to see if they can gain ground and put themselves in position to give themselves a chance at an upset.
