Girls Tennis:

The Lady Minutemen ran into a team that strongly resembled their team two seasons ago in 2019.

Coming off of a CIF-SS Div. 5 Championship in 2018, Maranatha returned most of its players, but was moved up to Div. 3, where they played the following two seasons.

Today, MHS played the reigning Div. 5 champs who also return most of their lineup, and who is also now playing in Div. 3.

Maranatha is currently in rebuilding mode, as they only retain one player from their championship squad, senior Amanda Yee.

The rest of the team is either very new to tennis or is fairly new.

So, the 15-3 result against the Lancers wasn’t unexpected.

What WAS expected, however, is the fight and determination the Lady Minutemen showed.

Though perhaps discouraged at times, they stayed focused and kept up a solid effort throughout, nearly coming away with some wins.

All their points today were earned by singles players – #1 Stella Hsieh, who won her final two sets, 6-0, after dropping her opening set and #3 Audrey Loh, who won one set, 6-1. #2 Yee came very close in her first set, losing a nail-biter in a tie-breaker, 7-6(1).

Doubles were winless but gained valuable experience.

Both #1 Kasey McCoy/Violet Salvo and #2 Riley McCoy/Stella Chen lost close sets, 4-6, while #3 Esmee Eaton/Helena Chen continue to build their tennis acumen.

Today’s loss drops MHS to 2-2, heading into tomorrow’s match against a strong Div. 2 opponent, the 5-1 South Pasadena Tigers, at SPHS.
