Football:
There is no question that St. Francis is playing its best football of the season.
And it couldn’t have come at a better time.
The Golden Knights defense stepped up huge and played the starring role in Friday’s 20-0 victory over La Serna in a CIF-SS Division 4 semifinal round contest.
SFHS now has postseason wins over Irvine, Chaparral and La Serna by a combined margin of 95-34.
Perhaps the most rewarding feeling for SFHS players, coaches and fans was watching the Golden Knights get massive contributions from its offense, defense and special teams.
After a scoreless first quarter, Clint Geryak’s 27-yard field goal gave SFHS a 3-0 lead at the half.
St. Francis quarterback Jack Jacobs extended the cushion to 10-0, when he scored on a 1-yard TD run in the third quarter.
Geryak gave St. Francis a 13-0 lead with his 24-yard, third-quarter field goal.
And if there was even the slightest concern that La Serna might make a comeback, Max Garrison put that to sleep with his 5-yard TD run in the fourth period.
It’s rare when special teams play gets their due credit, and because of that, it should be mentioned that SFHS kicker, Clint Geryak, accounted for eight of the Golden Knights’ 20 points on Friday.
Up next: St. Francis will host Long Beach Poly in the D-4 title game.
The Jackrabbits (10-3) shut out Cypress, 35-0, in their semifinal round showdown with the Centurions.
SFHS will be making their first trip to the championship game since 2017.
